This part of a brief, personal series on my experiences at Adepticon 2025.
Doubles of what?
The Adepticon Kill Team Doubles tournament is a fun 2v2 format, using one Volkus map adjacent to a Gallowdark one. Every player deploys on one of these maps, but during TP1, they can cross into the other half. Pairs share a Tac Op, selected from the union of choices across them.
I like doubles because it presents more complex games, as a pair of players might collaborate in the center, while presenting higher strategic complexity to navigate.
My buddy Francesc M. ran Nemesis Claw along my Warpcoven. One of the benefits of using double Astartes is that we have a similar number of activations, and since the rules packet essentially binds counteractions to happen on a pair by pair basis, it made sense for me to use a low Tzaangor count. Francesc generates lots of CPs and was generous to let me consume them. The other benefit is we could select Security Tac Ops, which were very advantageous for him on Gallowdark.
In the first round, we faced Robert and William on Wrecka and Kommandos respectively. This was obviously a very thematic and fun choice. Luckily we won - the game was decided on cross-map shots, from Volkus into the Gallowdark side, which is a big part of doubles strategy.
On the second round, we faced Jason (from the Just Another Kill Team Podcast) and Pierce on a double Phobos matchup. They had a fun theme called “Angles of Death”, relying on Jason’s gospel about ultraviolence using shots that ignore obscuring. I promised myself I wouldn’t fall for it, but unfortunately I lapsed during deployment and left many targets open for him to leverage. My destiny Sorcerer was erased in a single shot. But I am not one to shy away from ultraviolence - our half of the table was a legendary shootout from the first activation in TP1. The other half of the table saw very aggressive positioning. I feel a bit guilty because I ended up using a lot of CPs, leaving my teammate starved. Francesc got consistently bad rolls so he suffered lots of casualties early - I felt like I sabotaged him because of my deployment and his commitment to have me stay on the game. We lost it but it was interesting - we certainly put the “Kill” back in “Kill Team”.
In the third round, we faced Stephen on Vespids and Jason on Farstalkers, running a fun T’au auxiliary theme. I stayed on Volkus facing the Vespids, and the layout was shooty making their P1 weapons and reroll bonanza a big threat. I made lots of misplays but was saved by insane rolls. One of my sorcerers in the center lived at 1HP - I used “Echoes of the Warp” to counteract with two actions that kept me in the game, while my teammate exercised consistent violence on the Gallowdark side against the Farstalkers.
All in all, I enjoyed the chance to face such fun pairings. I recommend everyone to attend! However be aware that registration ills up pretty fast. You might get lucky on the day of the event as teams often drop so you might sneak in, but I wouldn’t count on it.
