A nerd’s journey

Welcome! I’m Alvaro. I share things I consider interesting here.

Mostly Boardgames, fiction, but anything might go.

I have a cozy Discord server here. All respectful people are invited.

Adepticon 2025 Doubles!

This part of a brief, personal series on my experiences at Adepticon 2025.

Doubles of what?

The Adepticon Kill Team Doubles tournament is a fun 2v2 format, using one Volkus map adjacent to a Gallowdark one. Every player deploys on one of these maps, but during TP1, they can cross into the other half. Pairs share a Tac Op, selected from the union of choices across them.

I like doubles because it presents more complex games, as a pair of players might collaborate in the center, while presenting higher strategic complexity to navigate.

Adepticon 2025: the Pod 1 tournament

This part of a brief, personal series on my experiences at Adepticon 2025.

What is this about?

“Pod” tournaments are typically 1-day events presented as a more casual and friendly environment within the context of a big convention, or adjacent to a Grand Tournament, so I was here mostly for vibes. I didn’t want to be extra competitive here but I had my adrenal glands ready in case I wanted to win. I had signed up for Kill Team Pods because I thought I needed some consistent practice for the Grand Tournament. I haven’t been playing nearly enough, other than the recent Chicagoland Dice Dojo Open, and every rep counts. I ended up at Pod 1 playing Warpcoven.

Adepticon 2025!

I mention some businesses and products here - I was not paid or compensated in any way. Quite the other way around, I paid them! Opinions are entirely my own.

Since I did so much Kill Team, it is a big chunk of that in what follows.

My Personal Journey to enlightment

I was lucky enough to be able to attend the Adepticon 2025 tabletop convention this year! I consider it a privilege to be close to such a fun event, and be able to afford it. I sincerely recommend it, it’s worth the effort!

Some fiction for my Kill Team - 2024

This story was written as background for the Kill team doubles at Adepticon 2024 - I was playing warpcoven and my team mate was playing Chaos cults.

Weeping Wisdom

The sterile hum of electromagnetic hovercraft droned through cavernous hangars bringing massive cargo to the escape ships. Hastily gang-pressed workers broke their backs over menial hauls under the watch of Skitarii and Servitor enforcers monitoring performance and surgically removing those that delayed the forecasted transport rates. The radiation levels were so high that most unaugmented humans developed symptoms within six hours and needed be definitively replaced.

Tournament Report: Dice Dojo Winter Open 2025

This was played with the first balance patch of the 3rd edition at 2025Q1. Knowing the mentioned teams’ rules might make the narrative clearer.

The bestest tournamentest

I recently attended the Dice Dojo Winter Open 2025 with my beloved Warpcoven because I didn’t have time to practice with my other season 1 teams lulz. The Dojo Open tournaments have always been great experiences for me, with an amenable atmosphere of friendly but competitive and competent opponents. I thought it might be interesting for people thinking about Warpcoven in a competitive scenario for me to revisit my choices.

The many compositions of Warpcoven

Preface

This article explains how different Warpcoven compositions work. Its intended audience is other Warcoven players evaluating alternative playstyles. I recommend having the team rules at hand, or being familiar with my other article. Updated due to balance changes from 2026Q2.

Easy as ABC

X/Y/Z is hard though.

Warpcoven has an exclusive advantage in its varied menu of operatives - and a unique boon in being allowed to change the number of activations, mixing 3APL and 2APL operatives. In this edition, I have fielded everything from 5 to 11 operatives (although 11 is no longer possible).

Warpcoven trickery

Alfur playing a game.

Preface

This article deals with combos and synergies available to the Warpcoven team. Its main audience is players familiar with the Warpcoven rules and Kill Team core rules, but I also hope it’s helpful for opponents so that they get a sense of what to expect when facing Warpcoven. You can check my other article if you want to brush up on the rules. Updated due to balance changes from 2026Q2.

Warpcoven Gameplan Showcase 1

Volkus Layout 5

Preface

This article assumes you have basic familiarity with the Warpcoven Kill Team. You can find a detailed introduction here. It is based on the team rules and balance as released - this tournament was played a month after KT2024 was released. Many of the rules mentioned here no longer exist.

I’m trying a written format of Battle Report, in case an enterprising reader feels like analyzing the narrative play by play. I don´t know yet if this format is helpful or clear. I often mention “Tempo” in this article - I will not explain much in this particular article, other than as a mix of multiple notions that mean the opponent is forced to react.

Warpcoven Manual

This what I typically bring to tournaments: Warpcoven torunament choices Yes, there are 1 or 2 operatives that I can’t field, but this is the box where they live.

Preface

This is an in-depth explanation of the basics. It is mostly geared to new players or opponents that are unfamiliar with the details. It was originally written based on the team rules and balance as released - then updated on balance changes from 2026Q1. I’ll do my best to update this as balance changes are published in rules, although it might take me some time because I’d like to see balance changes in action during real games instead of purely speculating.

Introduction to Warpcoven

Some fine Sorcerers, Rubrics and Tzaangors.

Preface

This article focuses on the Kill Team tabletop game, particularly in the Warpcoven faction. I assume you have basic familiarity with the Kill Team core rules. You’ll get more value from this reading if you have already played Kill Team and understand competitive playstyles such as the Approved Mission Ops package. For the sake of clarity, I will confine specific gameplan details to follow-up articles. It is based on the balance changes released on 2026-01. I’ll do my best to update this as balance changes are published in rules, although it might take me some time because I’d like to see balance changes in action during real games instead of purely speculating. I’ll keep this article a bit high level and conceptual, and reserve crunchier discussions and rules for other articles like this How to Play guide.
